Time Cut 2024 Afdah introduces Lucy Field (Madison Bailey), a resourceful yet isolated high school student traumatized by the murder of her sister, Summer. Obsessed with crime, Lucy spends her time tinkering with gadgets in her garage-turned-laboratory, trying to understand what happened on that fateful night in 2003. Though her grief is palpable, Lucy's character development is disappointingly shallow, her motivations reduced to her connection to her sister. This emotional depth is lost amid the messy plot twists and genre clichés that unfold.

When Lucy accidentally activates a time machine she built herself, she finds herself transported back in time to 2003, just days before her sister was murdered. The setting creates excitement and lends a nostalgic element to the film, especially as Lucy experiences the quirky fashion, music, and technology of the early 2000s. Unfortunately, the script relies on superficial allusions to the past without digging deeper into the era or using it to build tension.

Madison Bailey gives her all as Lucy, delivering a performance that brings out her character's determination, vulnerability, and courage. However, the role lacks emotional range, preventing the audience from truly empathizing with her journey. Antonia Gentry plays Summer, whose relationship with Lucy is central to the plot but is never fully explored. Their bond is conveyed mostly through one-dimensional flashbacks and brief interactions, but does little to deepen their dynamic.

Quinn (Griffin Gluck) is an unnecessary addition to the plot that serves mainly to add a few humorous moments. Given Quinn's superficial backstory and her role as the archetypal "nerdy but attractive" sidekick, the lack of chemistry between the characters seems even more forced. Supporting characters such as Gil (Michael Shanks) and Kendra (Rachael Crawford) are written superficially and serve primarily as plot elements to guide Lucy's journey.

Time Cut attempts to provide a slasher experience with the addition of a mysterious killer stalking the characters. But the film's killer is surprisingly disappointing, lacking both menace and a distinctive backstory. Though the murders are creatively constructed, the careful editing and quick cuts give them a tame and unimaginative feel that undermines the potential for genuine horror. In a genre known for its inventive deaths and black humor, Time Cut feels almost sterilized, eschewing the gore and suspense that would lend credibility to the slasher label.
